sunday morning

complacency

of the just-fed cat

Today’s haiku is a (quotidien) nod to the American poet Wallace Stevens, whose poem “Sunday Morning” (1915) has long been a favorite. It opens thus:

1

Complacencies of the peignoir, and late

Coffee and oranges in a sunny chair,

And the green freedom of a cockatoo

Upon a rug mingle to dissipate

The holy hush of ancient sacrifice.
