rising before dawn

Orion
first day of fall
the dead snake’s tail
still twitching
night passage
houses on the mainland
light the horizon
noon ferry
halfway across the bay
a monarch keeps pace
dry wind . . .
a kingfisher hovers
over pond mud
cobwebs cradle
a few fallen leaves . . .
frost advisory
rattling around in my head kingfisher
cold front . . .
a garden spider
tethers the woodshed
oppressive heat . . .
a dove looks down on us
from the roof peak
the unmown lawn
crawling with woolly bears . . .
heat haze
whorled aster
the shallow stream’s unseen
current
