August 30: Crickets

The chirping of crickets, called stridulation, is a result of the insect rubbing the two parts of his wings together. Only males make this music—to attract and woo a female, keep her near after they've mated, and defend her from other males. Interestingly, crickets "hear" each other's chirping through an eardrum-like organ on their front legs.
