morning heat
a fly lands on the fan
of iris leaves
cool of dawn . . .
two crows pick their way
across the yard
first mowing
a vulture circles
over the hayfield
moonset
a touch of ocean
in the damp air
full buck moon
our backyard becomes
a glade
storm front
the day lilies bend
before it
the prickly state of the globe thistle
Sunday sun
Japanese beetles mate
on the basil
over the meadow
one dragonfly becomes six
high noon
summer rain . . .
a cardinal still singing
somewhere upriver
frittering away
my lunch hour
great spangled fritillary
