migrant nighthawks
dozens flitting through
the birding list-serve
afternoon lake
dreaming of the sea
a raft of loons
fallen leaves
returning to the air
as sparrows
day of the dead
fallen leaves
flying up as sparrows

Yesterday marked the nine-year anniversary of this blog! That’s more than 3,200 haiku, although it hasn’t been until the last 400 or so that I feel like I’m finally getting the hang of it. Sort of. Sometimes.
the high calls
of migrating sparrows
so far yet to go
leaves rustling
with sparrows
fall migration
And a bonus haiku by guest contributor Vicki Henderson (my mom):
sprinkled from the sky
a peppering
of sparrows

first frost
winter ducks returning
from up north
autumn rain
sparrows feeding
in the leaf litter
calls of geese
landing in the field
among silent cows
harvest moon
distant calls of birds
migrating in the dark
turn of tide
cries of plovers
shifting in the mist
