heavy dew . . .
a swamp sparrow skulks
in the aster patch

morning fog . . .
the loud clear song
of the fox sparrow
I often dream that I’m writing haiku, but upon waking, don’t often remember what I wrote. This morning I did, though, and I thought the haiku kind of worked, if you remember that old joke: “make like a tree and leave.” The subconscious amazes me.
*
making like a tree migrant sparrows
a sparrow takes a bath
in a thawed stretch of stream
almost spring
humming to myself
something from childhood…
white-throated sparrow
filling in
around the rain
a sparrow’s song
domestic issues
a pair of song sparrows
mates in my yard
something in the air
reminiscent of spring
sparrow’s song
fallen leaves
returning to the air
as sparrows
day of the dead
fallen leaves
flying up as sparrows
Which version do you prefer?
Yesterday marked the nine-year anniversary of this blog! That’s more than 3,200 haiku, although it hasn’t been until the last 400 or so that I feel like I’m finally getting the hang of it. Sort of. Sometimes.
the high calls
of migrating sparrows
so far yet to go
leaves rustling
with sparrows
fall migration
And a bonus haiku by guest contributor Vicki Henderson (my mom):
sprinkled from the sky
a peppering
of sparrows
