morning heat
a vireo warms up
his voice
Inspired by a presentation by Anne Burgevin yesterday, on haiku prompts, given (via Zoom) at the Haiku Society of America’s 2021 Conference. (All presentations will be available for later viewing on YouTube.) The prompt was “morning rain.”
*
morning rain
the vireo’s song
on repeat
so many questions
first thing in the morning
vireo
deep blue sky
the vireo singing again
and again
news brief
the vireo’s violence
to the caterpillar
island fog
vireos melting away
in the apple tree
also unable
to let go of summer
singing vireo
early rain
vireo asking about
an umbrella
Today’s haiku is thanks to my friend Stacey, who gave me most of the poem in an email after we had to cancel a bird walk together this morning. I love how her words express the querulous song of the vireo.
barely audible
over the swollen river
vireo’s song
vireo peeking out
from a chestnut tree
i needed that
