leaf buds . . .
an osprey flies through
the river glare
hard conversation . . .
slowly a heron flaps
up out of the trees
hatching stoneflies . . .
a pair of wood ducks explores
a nest hole
worm moon
the robin’s singing
louder than the river
bleak sky
following crows’ calls
to a perched eagle
part of the river
disappears under ice
cold spell
rain all night
we wake
to a new river
snow on the river . . .
feeding buffleheads
flicker on and off
—I wrote this one for December 2020 New England Letters (which was shared today) in response to the prompt “surprise”
rain all night
the river grows
louder
across the river
a stand of bare poplars . . .
I put on a warmer coat
rain at last
the river raises
its voice
